Ukraine is leveraging its powerful – and cheap – new drone killers for air defense

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The icy ground crackling under their feet, members of an elite Ukrainian drone-hunting team set up for a long night.

Antennas and sensors are clipped to a light stand. Monitors and controls are pulled from hard cases, and a game-changing new weapon is readied for deployment.

The Sting, shaped like a flying thermos, is one of Ukraine's new homegrown interceptors.

The unit's commander says the interceptors can effectively counter Russia's fast-evolving suicide drones, which are now flying faster and at higher altitudes.

"Every destroyed target is something that did not hit our homes, our families, our power plants," said the officer, known only by the call sign "Loi," in line with Ukrainian military protocol. "The enemy does not sleep, and neither do we."

Nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities and power infrastructure have forced Kyiv to rewrite the air defense rule book and develop cut-price drone killers costing as little as $1,000.

Interceptors went from prototype to mass production in just a few months in 2025 and represent the latest shift in modern warfare.

Effective defense in Ukraine depends on mass production, rapid adaptation and layering low-cost systems into existing defenses instead of relying on a few expensive, slow-to-replace weapons.

Models like the Sting – made by the volunteer-driven startup Wild Hornets – and the newly appeared Bullet can surge in speed before crashing into enemy drones. They are flown by pilots watching monitors or wearing first-person-view goggles.

The economics are crucial. Andrii Lavrenovych, a member of the strategic council of the fast-growing startup General Cherry which develops the Bullet, says the drones they destroy cost anywhere from $10,000 to $300,000.

"We are inflicting serious economic damage," he said.

Russia favors the Iranian-designed Shahed suicide drone and has produced multiple variants of the triangle-winged craft, armed with jammers, cameras and turbojet engines in a constant battle of innovation.

"In some areas they are one step ahead. In others, we invent an innovative solution, and they suffer from it," Lavrenovych said.

Federico Borsari, a defense analyst at the Washington-based Center for European Policy Analysis, says interceptors are a valuable addition to Ukraine's — and Europe's — anti-drone arsenal.

"Cheap interceptor drones have become so important, and so quickly, that we can consider them a cornerstone of modern counter-unmanned aerial systems," he said. "They realign the cost and scale equation of air defense."

Their mobility and low cost allow them to defend more targets, but Borsari added: "It would be a mistake to see them as a silver bullet."

Their success, he said, depends on sensors, fast command and control as well as skilled operators. They can be used in a menu of options that starts with multimillion-dollar missiles and ends with nets and antiaircraft guns.

Defense planners in Ukraine and NATO expect the hyper-scaling of drone production on both sides of the conflict to continue in 2026, adding urgency to European plans to create a layered air-defense system known as the "drone wall."

The network along Europe's eastern borders, to be rolled out over two years, is designed to detect, track and intercept drones, with Ukrainian-style interceptors playing a potentially central role in destroying threats.

Ukrainian drone makers are set next year to expand coproduction with U.S. and European firms. Merging battle-tested designs and valuable data with Western scale and funding, the collaboration would boost output and embed Ukraine in NATO-member supply chains.

Another inevitable trend, Lavrenovych argues, is increased automation.

"Our mobile groups shouldn't have to approach the front line, where they become targets," he said.

"Drones must become fully autonomous robots withartificial intelligence— as scary as that may sound — to help our soldiers survive."

'Home Alone 2' nailed holiday travel chaos, but flight rules make movie's plot less plausible today

Panic erupts in the McCallister household as soon as the day begins. The parents'alarm clock never rings, bags and coats spill across the floor, and the family barrelsout the doorto catch a flight to Florida.

The pandemonium intensifies at the airport. There, the McCallisters must dodge fellow holiday travelers and luggage as they sprint to their gate while final boarding calls echo overhead. Amid the mayhem, 10-year-old Kevin accidentally boards the wrong plane and finds himself alone in New York City just days before Christmas.

More than 30 years after "Home Alone" turned travel chaos into comedy, the frantic opening scenes of the movie's 1992 sequel still hit close to home, especially as the busyyear-end travel periodgets underway. But would Kevin McCallister still end up "Lost in New York" in 2025?

In an age of federalairport security checkpointsand digitized air travel, the fictional character played byMacaulay Culkinalmost certainly wouldn't have gotten onto a commercial airliner by himself, said Sheldon Jacobson, who studies air travel operations and security and whose research contributed to the design ofTSA PreCheck.

"In the 1990s, it was plausible," Sheldon said. "It was close enough to plausible that people weren't rolling their eyes at it, but this would not happen today."

Mix-ups in movie much less feasible

The Sept. 11, 2001, attacksfundamentally changedhow Americans move through airports, ushering the creation of theTransportation Security Administration, government-runsecurity screenings, mandatory ID checks and restricted gate access. Before 9/11, travelers could head straight to their plane with little more than a paper ticket. Now, every passenger and bag is screened, names are checked against flight manifests and access beyond security checkpoints is tightly controlled.

Even the paper tickets that made Kevin's mix-up possible are largely a thing of the past. In the film, Kevin frantically trails a man wearing a coat like his father's to the wrong gate at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, then crashes into an airline agent, sending both his ticket and a stack of boarding passes fluttering to the floor. Kevin explains that his family is already on the plane and he doesn't want to get left behind.

"Do you have a boarding pass?" the agent asks. Kevin gestures to the pile of paper tickets and is ultimately allowed onto the plane.

Today, boarding passes are tied to specific passengers, often stored on smartphones and scanned at the gate to confirm travelers are on the correct flight. The stricter unaccompanied minor policies and fees of airlines would add yet another layer of protection today, Jacobson said.

In the movie, the gate agent walks Kevin down the jet bridge and asks if he spots his family onboard. Kevin points to the stranger he's mistaken for his father. The agent waves him on, tells him to grab an empty seat and that's that.

Tighter rules on children flying alone

Unaccompanied minors are closely tracked today. Most carriers require children under a certain age, often 14 or younger, to be formally registered as unaccompanied minors if they aren't traveling with an adult, Jacobson said. That comes with special paperwork and airline staff members who are assigned to escort a child through the airport, to their seat on the plane and off the plane at their destination.

The Biden administration proposed a rule last year to ban airlines fromcharging familiesadditional fees to sit together on flights and requiring them to seat children ages 13 and under next to an accompanying adult when adjacent seating is available at booking. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said earlier this month he had no update on the proposal.

Even if every current safeguardsomehow failed, a passenger on the wrong plane would get noticed quickly, Jacobson said. Flight attendants review passenger counts and special-service lists before departure. A 10-year-old boy missing from one flight and an extra child on another would trigger immediate alarms.

In other words, the movie magic holds up 33 years after "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" came out. The logistics do not, Jacobson said.

"We take for granted that we had those freedoms back then that we don't have today, for good reason," he said. "We had to give up those freedoms in exchange for other freedoms, like safer air travel."

What to expect this week

The December holidays still can be a hectic time to travel. This year, 122.4 million Americans were expected to travel at least 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home between Saturday and New Year's Day, topping last year's record of 119.7 million, according to AAA's holiday forecast.

"Holiday celebrations look different for everyone, but the common thread is the desire to travel, whether it's returning to your hometown or exploring new destinations," Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said.

About 89% of holiday travelers, or 109.5 million people, are expected to go by car, while more than 8 million are expected to take domestic flights, AAA said. The passenger numbers would be a record for the holiday period despite domestic roundtrip flights costing an average of 7% more compared tolast year, according to AAA data.

Back in a fictional 1992, Kevin pulls off a luxurious stay at Manhattan'sPlaza Hotel, where he briefly crosses paths with Donald Trump, who owned the hotel from 1988 to 1995. Trump'spast connectionto the hotel andhis brief movie cameohave sometimes come upduring his political careerand presidencies.

The same burglars who terrorized the McCallister family's Chicago home in the first "Home Alone" are in New York for the sequel, plotting to steal a toy store's cash donations for a children's hospital. With a mischievous grin, Kevin sets a series of over-the-top traps, sending the crooks tumbling, slipping and screaming through the store and thwarting their Christmas Eve scheme.

When the thrill of his solo adventure fades, Kevin misses his family and makes a wish to see his mother — "even if it's just once and only for a couple minutes," he says. "I just need to tell her I'm sorry." At that very moment, his mom appears, and they reunite beneath the twinkling Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

"It's a wonderful story element," Adam Paul, a film professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said of the holiday chaos central to the "Home Alone" movies. "But it is ultimately a great representation of how and why we make these journeys."

Cheris at the center of a lively online debate after sparking accusations that she was lip-syncing duringher recent performanceonSaturday Night Live.

The 79-year-old music legend brought her star power to Studio 8H for two rousing holiday jams this weekend, but some viewers were quick to notice a few inconsistencies in her set, particularly during her first track of the night, a rendition of her 2023 Christmas jam "DJ Play a Christmas Song."

On more than one occasion, Cher's lips stopped moving while the song, and her vocals, continued undisturbed.Saturday Night Livetypically allows backing vocal tracks for its musical guests, but the show famously discourages lip-syncing during its musical performances.

Representatives for Cher andSNLdid not immediately respond toEntertainment Weekly's request for comment.

On social media, some viewers did not mince words in their reactions to Cher allegedly lip-syncing.

"She isn't even singing," one X usercomplained. "This is some of the worst lip-syncing I have ever seen."

Commenting on the YouTube upload of her performance, another viewer wrote, "Why lip-sync? Such a beautiful song and such an amazing artist."

Meanwhile, others argued that it doesn't matter whether or not Cher was singing live.

"Cher just did one of the worst lip-syncs I've ever seen onSNL, which obviously makes her even more iconic," one Xuser wrote.

Addedanother, "Who cares if she's lip-syncing? SHE'S CHER, BITCH."

Another X user was also quick to defend her. "Cher is the ONLY person that gets a pass for lip-syncing on #SNL," theywrote. "She's an icon. Lip-sync if you want, Queen!"

In the YouTube video comments section, another quipped, "Idc [I don't care] about her lip-syncing. It's late, she's 80, she just wants to have some fun."

Prior to this, Cher was accused of lip-syncing during her 2023 performance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. She isnot the only artist to face such accusations, however. Fans have also blasted musicians like Ciara, Jewel, and Rita Ora for it. In 2018, John Legend came to Ora's defense in asocial media post, telling fans, "Fun fact: We all have to lip-sync on this parade because the floats don't have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance."

Lip-syncing accusations aside, Cher's dual performances marked a big moment for the global superstar. Before the latest episode, though, she has been featured on the show and even participated inSNL50: The Homecoming Concert.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Hanukkah starts on the night of Dec. 14, 2025, and ends on Dec. 22, so it won't overlap with Christmas

  • The term "Chrismukkah" was popularized in 2003 by the character Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) on The O.C.

  • Celebrity couples who celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas include Brody and Leighton Meester, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher and Pink and Carey Hart

It's the merriest time of year —Chrismukkah!

The term, a fusion of Christmas andHanukkah, originated fromAdam Brody's character onThe O.C.in 2003 and has remained a part of the cultural zeitgeist, as well as Brody's celebrations both on- and off-screen.

On Netflix'sNobody Wants This, the actor portrays a rabbi named Noah, who is dating a non-Jewish podcaster (Kristen Bell). In real life, Brodyhas been marriedtoLeighton Meestersince 2014, and they celebrate both traditions during the holidays withtheir two children.

The acting duo is far from the only stars who observe Christmas and Hanukkah, which starts the evening of Dec. 14, 2025.

Interfaith couples likeAshton Kutcher, who was raised Christian and later studied Judaism, andMila Kunis, who is Jewish, have their own blended family rituals.

" ... Whether it's Easter, which we've now all accepted into our Jewish household, or Christmas, it doesn't matter," KunistoldEntertainment Tonightin October 2017. "It's all family time, but having kids, we're building up our own little versions of tradition."

However, the idea of a joint celebration existed beforeThe O.C.According to the National WWI Museum and Memorial, in the 19th century, German Jews used the term "Weihnukkah," combining the German word for Christmas (Weihnachten)with Hanukkah.

From musicians to actors to athletes, here are some of the celebrities who trim the treeandlight a menorah during the holiday season.

Brody is the reason for the Chrismukkah season (well, at least the use of the portmanteau).

Famously coined on season 1 ofTheO.C., Seth (Brody) —whose dad Sandy (Peter Gallagher) is Jewish and mom Kirsten (Kelly Rowan) is Christian and "didn't really know how to raise Seth," as Kirsten explained — tells Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) that his invented "greatest super-holiday" is "sweeping the nation ... or at least the living room."

"So, what's it gonna be, huh? You want your menorah or a candy cane?" Seth asks Ryan during thenow-iconic speechwhile holding up one of each item. "Christmas or Hanukkah? Don't worry about it, buddy, because in this house, you don't have to choose. Allow me to introduce you to a little something that I like to call Chrismukkah."

After that, the teen soap celebrated with annual Chrismukkah episodes.

Brody, who plays a rabbi in an interfaith relationship onNobody Wants This, has been celebrating off-camera for years, too. The San Diego native was raised Jewish, but his wife,Gossip Girlalum Meester, was not, so they enjoy both holidays with their two children.

Still, it took two decades for Meester to realize her husband had something to do with Chrismukkah's popularity.

"It's so funny because I have heard that word before. I mean, I can put two and two together, I get what that is," Meester reportedly told the now-defunct outlet The Messenger in November 2023. "I didn't know [The O.C.] was the origin of it."

Meester went on to explain that while some of her and Brody's Christmas activities are "the most L.A.," like taking a walk on the beach or pier or hanging by the pool, much of what they do is "to some extent what a lot of people probably celebrate without even knowing."

"[Adam] seems like he appreciates Christmas and Christmas trees and thinks that it's a beautiful holiday," the actress said. "We're not religious in any way. So part of it is lost, but we'll do all the other stuff, too. We kind of combined, so I guess that we do it."

On the first night of the holiday in December 2023, the "So What" singer shared a photo of her menorah and bedazzled giant dreidelon Instagram, as well as a video showing her lighting candles and praying with her family.

"Happy Chanukah to all those who celebrate," she captioned the post. "May there be light in darkness always. May there be peace in our hearts, our homes, and in the world."

The formerThat '70s Showcostars andreal-life couplecelebrate both holidays with their children, daughter Wyatt Isabelle and son Dimitri Portwood, as Kunis is Jewish and Kutcher was raised Christian but has studied Judaism.

Kunis actually began celebrating Christmas years earlier.

She moved to the U.S. from Ukraine at age 8 with her parents,Mark and Elvira Kunis, and discovered that "Christmas has a magical quality to it."

"In Russia, back in the day, it was a very religious holiday, so you don't celebrate Christmas if you're not Christian and if you're not at Mass. So I, being Jewish, was like, 'Christmas is not for you,' " she toldEntertainment Tonightin 2017.

After moving stateside, her family felt the holiday was more inclusive, so they "literally bought a Christmas tree."

In 2024, while lighting the Hanukkah candles with author and activistNoa Tishby, Kunis explained that, though shewasn't particularly religious growing up, especially while living in the Soviet Union, she and Kutcher now practice both the cultural and religious aspects of Judaism as a family.

TheWake Up Dead Manactress also admitted to being "ready for any holiday at any moment" during an appearance onThe Tonight Showin December 2025, prompting hostJimmy Fallonto share a photo of one of Kunis' lawn decorations: a giant menorah taller than she is.

"We are all inclusive. We have all the decorations," Kunis explained.

When Fallon pointed out that Kunis was the same size as a dreidel on the blow-up, she said, "That's nothing! I have a seven- ... eight-foot Santa Claus. I have reindeer everywhere. I have Mickey Mouses. I have snowmen. I love holidays."

Kunis also shared that inside her home, she decorated with two evergreens: a "giant" Christmas tree and "a Charlie Brown Hanukkah bush," describing the latter as "a really beautiful blue-and-silver little tree."

Traditions are important toLeslie Odom Jr.andNicolette Robinson, and they shared as much when they published their first picture book,I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know, in 2023.

When it came to writing the book, the parents told PEOPLE in June 2022 they were inspired by their "sacred" family nighttime ritual, where they "do bath-time, jammies, we read togetherand then we sing together."

Celebrating both Christmas and Hanukkah has been an essential tradition for Robinson, who grew up with a Jewish mother and a Christian father. Her parents instilled in her the importance of understanding her background, which is something the couple is passing along to their children.

"It's been a beautiful thing that I want to continue because being Jewish is also a big part of my life and my kids' lives, and we celebrate the Christian holidays as well, and even more so I feel like holidays are about family and connecting and your heritage and your culture and telling stories, and so that's mostly our focus," Robinson told Nordstrom for their2022 holiday campaign.

The Grammy andTony Awardwinner added to his wife's sentiment, telling Nordstrom, "Nicolette has an aunt that also celebrates both holidays, and she says that she celebrates all the fierce miracles. I loved that, [so] I adopted that saying."

It takes a village.

Courtney B. Vancewas honored witha star on the Hollywood Walk of Famethis week — and he had a long list of people to thank who "paved the way" for him in his career.

During his speech at the Dec. 16 ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, the 65-year-old actor took some time to shout out a number of actors, industry members and loved ones who have supported him on his decades-long journey in the entertainment business.

"I have learned that I'm not rich in money or things. I'm rich in the people who surround myself and our family," Vance said. "I'm most grateful for all the people who held my hand and paved the way."

"People likeMeryl Streep… Lloyd Richards and Earle Gister. Henry Woronicz," he added. "My uncles Lloyd and Lee Daniels. My aunt Lois Anne."

Continuing his long list of shout-outs, Vance mentioned several other mentors and friends, includingJames Earl Jones,Mary Aliceand "the entire cast" of the Broadway production ofFences, as well asStockard Channing, Swoosie Kurtz and the rest of the original stars ofSix Degrees of Separation. He also thanked his team, his parents, histwo children— daughter Bronwyn and son Slater, both 19 — and "finally, the person who has made me the man I am today, my wifeAngela Bassett."

Earlier in his speech, Vance had recalled being by Bassett's side when she received her own star back in 2008.

"I saw this honor bestowed upon my wife March 20, 2008, when our children were almost 2, and I remember how huge a day it was for both our families and to return to this hallowed place directly across the street from where she was honored and have that same honor bestowed upon me, is really more happiness than I emotionally can bear, but I must shoulder on," he said, eliciting some laughs from the crowd.

Bassett, 67, also gave a little speech on behalf of her husband at the ceremony on Dec. 16, calling Vance a "committed, relatable and deeply reliable" actor. "He shows up fully every time, onstage, on-screen, and on television, drowning each performance in emotional truth and the human complexity," she said.

"Today's honor is deeply deserved. This star recognizes not only his artistry, but his integrity, his generosity and his grace with which he moves through the world," she continued, before addressing Vance directly: "I'm proud of you. I love you, and I'm grateful that the world now has a star that bears your name."

Bronwyn and Slater also each took to the podium to share a tribute for their dad. The latter described Vance as "the most altruistic public servant that I've ever encountered."

"Empathy and taking care of people are one thing, but consistently bearing witness to others' existences is entirely another. I've never seen someone cherish people like my father, expecting and wanting no award," Slater said. "This man goes out of his way to make sure that people around him are at ease, helping in any way conducive to that goal."

In her speech, Bronwyn noted that while the "world knows [Vance] as an award-winning actor on stage and screen," he is "an award-winning father at home" to her and her twin brother.

There's no one more deserving of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, not just for the greatness you've given this industry, but for the greatness of who you are."

"I love you, Dad," she added.
